seriously not in kansas anymore

Today wasn't our most exciting day of the trip. Our goal was to get from Topeka, KS to Limon, CO. We were successful.

We started out the day with a nice, hot shower and some oatmeal again. Jim, a very friendly employee at the campground, was more than willing to keep talking to us and trying to help us make our breakfast. He told us that you can see the Rockies from Limon. That was false information. We thought it was going to be a rough drive through Kansas, but it really wasn't bad at all. The temperature was much more bearable today and there was a great breeze every time we got out of the car. It turns out it really is quite windy, just like Dorothy experienced. The landscape really was pretty nice to look at. We thought it was going to be boring, but the eastern side of Kansas was really quite beautiful. Tons of farms, pastures, even some hills and valleys. As Jo pointed out, we'd rather be looking at that than urban sprawl.

We passed some wind farms on the way, which were pretty cool to see. Also we saw oils rigs and what not. It got me thinking that everyone should drive across the country at least once in their lives. There's just so much to see and learn. Even from just driving across the interstate you can see where some of your food comes from. There was a sign that said "The average Kansas farmer feeds 128 people." It really gives a "face for the name" if you will.

As the landscape got more and more flat, I was reminded of elementary school geography lessons. We learned about the Great Plains, and all of those lessons came back to me as we were driving today. We even saw a prairie dog at a rest stop!

We got to Limon, CO around 2pm central time. It looks just like Kansas. There are no mountains in sight yet. It's a pretty crazy town, there's basically a grocery store and bank. This campground isn't the most shaded. We kind of feel like we're in the middle of the dessert. We did spend some quality time in the pool and I got nice and sun burned. It was bound to happen one of these days. Right now we're just relaxing and waiting for it to cool down a bit before we make dinner. A man keeps walking in the club house (where we are) and telling us a joke and then leaving. Eastern Colorado sure is an interesting place. I don't think I'll need to come back.

Time to go figure out how to set up a Picasa site to get some pictures up. Enjoy your weekend! We get to see Ben and Andy tomorrow!
