now the real vacation starts

Even though Jo and I have been having a blast this entire trip so far, we're really starting to get into this vacation thing. We woke up yesterday morning in Limon, CO and drove about 3 hours to Avon, right outside of Vail. Once we hit Denver the mountains were prominent and the views were extraordinary. We met up with Andy at a coffee shop and just hung out there for a bit. We decided to go up to Beaver Creek for a bit to take a look around. Wow.

Since Andy pretty much knows everyone in this town, we rented 3 bikes for free and then took the chair lift up the mountain also for free. He just walks around like he owns the place and people just let him do whatever he wants. It's pretty great. Once we got to the top of the mountain we took a little walk around. We walked up the mountain a bit more and then off on a "trail" that Ben and Andy used to ski. It really wasn't much of a path at all. He showed us some places that they used to ski and they were literally just straight down. It was scary to even be walking near it.

We then went back to the chair lift to pick up our bikes. Jo and I had our first mountain biking experience. It was not easy. We started down a single track because Andy said it was easier. Uh. Easier than what? It took some getting used to and trial and error, but I got the hang out it. Jo didn't have as great of a time, but was still glad she did it. It was definitely scary but the views were worth it. I definitely got a rush coming down the mountain. I ended up going ahead of Andy and Jo when we got back on the main path. It was easier to stay on the trail since it was as wide of a road, but you picked up speed much more quickly. It was a great time.

After we all got down the mountain we met up with Ben and all went to get something to eat. We had some delicious burgers and beer. Yum. Ben had to work so Andy, Jo, and I went to Walcott to go fishing. Andy did most of the fishing but Jo and I threw some casts. It was a great way to spend an afternoon outside. The views of the mountains, the breeze, the sun, and the river were all perfect. The water was freezing so it cooled you off right quick if you got hot. I could not believe how perfect the weather and scenery were.

We weren't having much luck with the actual fishing part of our afternoon though. We tried a couple different holes but didn't get anything. We were going to our last hole and Andy said we were probably going to have to buy our dinner. He took his first cast at that hole and caught a beautiful rainbow trout. There's dinner. After cleaning it up we headed back to Ben's house for dinner. Jo and I went to the store to buy some veggies. We all helped cook and ate a delicious meal of grilled trout (as fresh as it could be), red potatoes with a creamy dill sauce, broccoli, and corn on the cob. Summer eating is so delicious.

Overall, it was a pretty incredible day. I was so beat by the end. It felt delightful to sleep on a bed instead of the ground too. Needless to say, I fell asleep quite quickly.
